Synopsis: After getting into a serious car accident, a TV director discovers an underground sub-culture of scarred, omnisexual car-crash victims who use car accidents and the raw sexual energy they produce to try to rejuvenate his sex life with his wife.

CRASH was the winner of the “Special Jury Prize for Originality, Daring and Audacity” at the Cannes Film Festival Official Competition in 1996. This award had never been given before, nor since. It has also awarded with six Genie Awards from the Academy of Canadian Cinema. The 4K restoration of CRASH received its world premiere in Official Selection at the 76th Venice International Film Festival last fall.

« It was surprising and gratifying to discover at the Venice Film Festival last year that my 25-year-old film seems to be of enthusiastic interest to a young audience, including many who were not yet born when I made the film,» says David Cronenberg.

At the film’s press screening in Cannes back in 1996, critics and journalists were equally divided between the extremely enthusiastic and the equally hostile, resulting in a physical brawl during the screening. “Ban this car crash sex film” was the frontpage headline of the Daily Mail the next day. This led to a debate in the British parliament and the banning of the film in London theatres. An NC17 rating in the US delayed the film’s American release by several years. In France, Italy, Germany, and Spain, Crash was released to critical and commercial acclaim.

“Producing Crash was one of the highlights of my career. It was an honour to back David Cronenberg’s fearless and unflinchingly bold vision. We all embarked on this adventure without a safety net. This is a movie that could not be made today.” says producer Robert Lantos.
